Each year, over 40 million tons of food, about 1500 kilograms a second, are thrown away in the United States alone. An incredibly wasteful act, also economically, considering that much of it is still intact and edible. Together with friends, Jeremy Seifert wanted to analyze what Los Angeles supermarkets dump at day’s end and to determine whether it really is unusable. They literally dive into the production of the city’s garbage: the result, like the amount recovered, is truly impressive.
Jeremy Seifert earned a degree in English from John Brown University and a masters degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. Dive! is his first film and has been shown at the San Francisco Green Film Festival and the Festival International du Film d’Environment, among others.
