Flower petals floating on dark water, animals scavenging in garbage, men rummaging for precious objects, motionless fishermen and parked cars that seem to observe the horizon. These are just some of the impressions the filmmaker collected in an attempt to describe daily life on Broad Channel Island, the only populated island (about 3000 inhabitants) in Jamaica Bay, south of Brooklyn, New York. The result is a portrait of a unique ecosystem, where movement and action accompanied by gentle waves breaking on the beach or the rocks repeat the same rhythm across the seasons.
Sarah J. Christman has numerous shorts to her credit, including Bush for Peace, Never Still, Dear Bill Gates, winner of the New Visions Award at the San Francisco Festival, Minding the Hive, Young Continent and Broad Channel. She is a researcher with the Film Department, Brooklyn College.
