The Mirror

Despite its modern appearance, the village of Viganella is largely uninhabited, a pale remnant of a once florid community. The village mayor, and one of its few younger residents, has a dream: to erect a huge mirror on the mountain towering over the village in order to reflect light down into the village during the months when it receives nary a ray of sunlight. This would not only light up the village in winter but also encourage the villagers to come out of their homes and persuade others to continue to live there. Will he manage to realize his dream or will it be a final futile attempt, worthy of a tourist curiosity, against the village’s ultimate destiny?

Il regista / The Director

David Christensen has directed films since 1997. His War Hospital (2005) is a documentary about the world’s largest field hospital. His first fiction feature, Six Figures, was previewed at the Toronto Film Festival.

Le riprese di questo film sono durate circa dieci settimane, nell’arco di più di un anno; alla fine il materiale girato era imponente. Di fronte a un simile approccio filmico, i montatori di solito tendono a sospirare profondamente. Ma se, come nel mio caso, quello che conta è restituire con fedeltà la vita delle persone, allora fare film vuol dire seguire il proprio istinto, correndo il rischio di girare, anche se non sai come andrà a finire. Ed è quello che abbiamo fatto. Questo modo di fare cinema richiede uno slancio fideistico. Richiede che il regista entri nella situazione senza sapere cosa accadrà, ma con la convinzione che qualcosa di incredibilmente speciale e commovente emergerà dalle storie di queste persone che stanno cercando di portare la luce nel loro villaggio. La trama del film segue più di un filo narrativo, perché tante sono le storie vissute, giorno dopo giorno, dagli abitanti di Viganella e della Valle Antrona, tutte si intrecciano con la storia dello specchio... Spero che questo film riveli l’umanità, la compassione, lo humour di questa piccola, unica valle.
