CinemAmbiente in cooperation with Circoscrizione VI - Torino, organizes the film exhibition 'Ecokids 2011', screenings for the primary schools of the city. All the events will be introducedby an environmental expert.
Despite being Africa’s most populous city (18 million inhabitants), Cairo has no municipal garbage collection service. Instead, the daily load of about 3 tons is collected by the Zaballeen, who live in the garbage dumps on the city outskirts and make their livelihood with recycling. When Mai Iskander encountered this world in 2005, she started to film children from the Zaballeen community, documenting their daily routines, their dreams and hopes, with a view to describe the increasingly critical issue of garbage disposal.
Mai Iskander graduated from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, and has worked on several television shows, dramatics and commercials as a cinematographer. Garbage Dreams, her first feature film, earned her the Reed Current award.
