Normandy is home to more nuclear power plants than anywhere else; yet this world record is something of a taboo for the local population loathe to openly discussing the problems and risks of radioactive waste disposal. But with earnest humor, Hoffenberg manages to lift the silence in interviews with politicians, nuclear industry operators, Greenpeace activists and the man on the street, probing opinions on a sensitive issue: 84% of France's power supply comes from atomic energy.
Esther Hoffenberg made her first film, Comme si c'était hier, a documentary-style feature, codirected with Myriam
Abramowicz. She then was radio producer for France Culture and film distributor for L'Office National du film du Canada. In 1989 she founded the production company Lapsus, for which she has produced nearly 60 films. In
2005 she directed the internationally prizewinning documentary Les deux vies d'Eva, followed by Discorama, signé Glaser (2007).
