MESSAGE ON WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Secretary General UN
Regaining direct contact with nature can also start by taking small steps. In Milan's postindustrial Bovisa district, urban farmers have been taking over abandoned factory land, turning it into small gardens, restoring a rural aspect to the outer city limits. And despite forced expropriations, the old folks keep tilling their vegetable plots. This short yet poetic account, a part of the Dalle terre di nessuno (2009) project, comprises images Annese collected over the past 20 years, presenting an unusual view of the city's outskirts as they are transformed by industrial redevelopment and recent immigration to the area.
Elvio Annese studied at the Ermanno Olmi Ipotesi Cinema school before working as writer for Telepiù and as documentary screenplay writer for La conquista del K2 (2003), National Geographic Award winner at the 2004 Festival de Autrans. Between 2004 and 2009 he co-directed with Roberto San Pietro five documentaries on lyric opera productions staged at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan; in 2009, he made Dalle terre di nessuno, a reportage on the landscape and social changes the Milan outskirts have undergone in recent years.
