In 1962 in the province of Cagliari, the SARAS oil refinery went into operation, businessman Angelo Moratti's ambitious plan to turn a poor rural area into a promising industrial zone. Comprising 800 hectares, the plant soon changed the local economy and the landscape. However, beneath the sheen of progress lay the environment impact of harmful emissions that soon caused disease among the local population and plant employees. Massimiliano Mazzotta's razor-sharp style cuts to the truth revealed in eyewitness testimonies, covered up by the authorities and plant management, putting together evidence for a highly topical enquiry, since the work accident last May that cost the life of three refinery workers.

Massimiliano Mazzotta (b. Lecce, 1972) started working as a photographer at age 18 years on assignment in Europe, Africa, and Asia, before turning to directing advertising, fiction and video art shorts, including 6 x 9 (2002), Air Linate (2003), La Coop sei tu (2003), Metropoli (2004), Nostrike_Vigili del fuoco (2004), Mr. Parkinson (2006), Tsukiji Market (2006), Lettera alla mia dea (2007), Il frutto della speranza (2008), presented at numerous film festivals.
