Crudo

First prize winner at the 2008 Rodos Ecofilms, this film gives a gentle portrait of a strong-willed boy. Like other boys his age, 11-year-old Tom leads a normal life: school, friends, football; except for a food intolerance. On his mother’s advice, he follows a raw food diet which comprises only uncooked fruit and vegetables. Not an easy choice having to explain the condition to his schoolmates and avoid the temptation of eating something that could make him ill (like a week-long fever after eating a slice of bread), besides dealing with his mother's protectiveness and her not understanding how cooked food can be harmful.

regista

Anneloek Sollart (b. Amsterdam, 1965) studied journalism and graduated from the New York Film Academy in 1993. After working in advertising and TV, on the series Streetmuseum and Route Hollandaise, she made her directorial film debut with the documentary Boom Boom Viola (2001), about the jazz musician Tony Viola, followed by Crazy Days (2001), Live at the Horsetrack (2002-2003), I am Strong (2004) and the reality show Als de vrouw van huis is (2007).

I wanted to make a film about Tom, who’s is probably the first and so far only child in the Netherlands who has been living on a diet of nuts, fruit and raw vegetables for five years now. I am myself a meat-eater, I love pasta and bread and I could’t live on just raw-food for one day!! But I didn’t want to pick sides in this film. I just wanted to show Tom in his daily life, wich is a very complicated life. Tom has to be very diplomatic, he respects his friends who all eat bread and meat, and on the other hand he respects his mother who says you get cancer from bread. Still Tom succeeds to navigate between those two different worlds….This is what strikes me about Tom. An interview with his mom, Francis and her son, earlier this year on a Dutch TV talkshow, caused a stir when writer Hugo Borst branded Tom's mother an extremist who needed psychiatric help. But Francis is unflustered. Tom gets an apple after playing soccer not a hotdog. Tom conforms to the way of life his mother enforces, but also realises there is another world, full of pancakes, candy and fries. That why I wanted to make this film. Tom is forced to be different and yet he is a strong boy, who survives.
