China's Wild West exploits masterful photography to document a little known reality. Every winter in western China the Yurungkash river dries up, leaving its rocky bed exposed. The local inhabitants, the majority of which Muslims, mine the riverbed looking for jade, which is 40 times more valuable than gold. Despite the cold and the harsh working conditions, hundreds of jade miners of all ages pan for jade in the hope of striking it rich.

Urszula Pontikos (b. Poland) currently lives in the U.K. She earned a degree in filmmaking at the National Film and Television School before working as director of photography and operator on features, shorts, documentaries, commercials and for TV. China's Wild West, her directorial debut film, has been presented at numerous international festivals, including the 2009 Sundance Film festival.
