Live before you die (Vivez avant de mourir)

Vivi prima di morire

This road film is the result of a 9-month journey following a Travellers caravan, a sort of present-day hippies, who roam the English countryside in their colored horse-pulled wagons filled with self-made handicrafts, moving between meetings and fairs, followed by their animals, and in search of direct contact with nature and others, outside the restrictive rules of modern society. The soundtrack by the Finnish group Husky Rescue and the beautiful super8 images convey a nostalgia for times past and a hymn to a simpler, carefree life. The film was presented in the Short Film Corner of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Tom Lloyd earned a degree in Cinema and Creative Technology and worked as editing assistant in advertising before entering a career as video artist and filmmaker for Welfare State International, The Sage Gateshead, Whitewood and Fleming, The Ruskin Foundation and Lanternhouse International. Works to his credit include the short Supercasino (2008) and Slave Label, a documentary series presented at numerous international festivals. In 2007 he founded Dreamtime Film Ltd., his production company.

Back in 1995 I found myself sitting round a fire on a road protest camp in Devon. I had spent the previous year or so living at and filming protests and had managed to sell some of the. Around the fire were a group of people who had been travelling the green lanes of the South West of England with handcarts, goats donkeys and horses. I woke up the next morning realising that the only reason I had been living and working in London was to earn enough money so that I could go and live in the countryside, so why didn’t I just go and live in the countryside?! I made a promise to the people round that fire that I would meet up with them again in a few weeks with my own horse drawn turnout. A few weeks later I set off from Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria with a pair of horses and a hand-cranked clockwork Russian super 8mm camera on a 9 month journey that would take me to Cornwall and back and change my life forever. It was the most amazing time in my life.
