Pietro recognises Elena Fonti, one of the weeders working in his rice field, as the child born from a relationship he had walked out of years earlier. Failing the courage to expose yet the man tries his best to protect her. His interest is misinterpreted by his nephew Mario, though, a madcap, who takes advantage of the situation and tries to seduce the girl with no success. In the meanwhile dramatic circumstances bring her to meet Gianni and love breaks out.
Raffaello Matarazzo has gone through different phases in Italian cinema. His first films go back to the early 40s and, his approach substantially unchanged, continues until the mid-sixties. Great crowd-puller, with films such as Catene, 1949, I figli di nessuno, 1951, Tormento, Chi è senza peccato, 1951 e Torna!, 1954, Matarazzo encodes the melodramatic vein of his stories turning them into faux melodramas.
