Situated between Tanzania and Kenya, Kilimangiaro at 5895m. Is the highest mountain in Africa. The Maasai call it the ‘White Mountain’, the legend of which grew up in Europe in 1849. At that time no-one imagined there could be snow and ice at that latitude. However there is snow on Kilimangiaro, even if not for much longer. Since 1912 the mountain has lost 80% of its glaciers and it is estimated that within the next 15 years the snow could disappear. The lives and habits of the people living at the foot of the ‘White Mountain’ are being profoundly influenced by the climatic variations that this change is bringing about.
