Deeply plunged into those years atmospheres of linguistic renovation, Orsini chooses to sift the automobile myth through the metalanguage of images. The result is not just a film on 130 but a work on the ways to communicate the car values through photography. The director follows up three artists works, showing the different approaches to introduce the new Fiat 130. The first artist, John Braison, carries on his reportage up the desert Colorado mountains.; the second one, the Swiss Benny Trutman, shoots into his atelier working on lights and, finally, the third one, Franco Rubartelli, the most creative, puts on stage a kind of tribute to Fellini, combining big pasteboard 130 shapes with miniature models, often focusing on the exciting beauty of female models to convey seduction and dream. A tribute to industrial photography.
Valentino Orsini (Pisa 1927 – Roma 2002) displays in his industrial documentaries a great affinity with the expressive atmospheres coming from the pop artists belonging to the “scuola romana”, and from his training as a sculptor. A kinship he tends to control in his long feature films. He begins with the Taviani brothers, in documentaries like San Miniato luglio 1943, Curtatone e Montanara, Pittori in città, Moravia, then he collaborates to L’Italia non è un paese povero by Joris Ivens; then the long feature films Un uomo da bruciare (1962) and I fuorilegge del matrimonio (1963). In 1968 he directs I dannati della terra, a “third world” subject, followed by Corbari (1970), where he tries to connect noir and themes of the Resistenza; L’amante dell’Orsa Maggiore inspired by the Polish Sergiusz Piasecki’s novel, another reflection on the connections between revolution and rebellion; Uomini e no (1978) a persuasive version of Elio Vittorini’s novel, and Figlio mio infinitamente caro... (1985).
