Saattuq the Inuit of northern Canada call ice. But for the Inuit who have always inhabited these desolate lands, it also means life, a life based on hunting and fishing. Threatening their survival is global warming. Scientists have estimated that by the end of this century this enormous area will be completely devoid of ice in summer… an ecologic disaster of unimaginable extent. The film enquires into the possible implications of this prospect and the political and economic stakes involved. For the area holds immense strategic importance for the countries bordering it: the U.S., Canada, Denmark, and Russia are all eager to claim control of the northern passage for world shipping routes.

Il regista / The Director

Laura O'Grady studied English literature before becoming a TV documentary director-producer for Global Network. Her film credits include: Recruiting for Terror, Tweens: Too Fast, Too Soon?, Straight Ahead, Catriona LeMay Doan: Blades of Glory, To Her Diying Breath: the Barbara Tarbox Story, After the Tsunami: Rebuilding Lives, and the TV programs The Movie Show and Inside Entertainment.

Global warming in all its complexity is so immediate there, and with such incredibly far reaching consequences (...). It was a terrifying privilege to witness the effect of climate change in the Arctic first hand, and to record the story of one of the most vulnerable places on earth. I hope that Thin Ice captures and communicates that experience».
