La terra degli Inuit si sta sciogliendo

Melting Lands

Life in the Nunavik region, the northernmost part of Quebec straddling the Arctic and subarctic climate zones, seen from the perspective of the Inuit, the inhabitants of this vast, inhospitable territory for hundreds of years, with a particular focus on their daily emergencies: problems with hunting and other traditional activities, growing economic dependence on provincial and national government support, cultural identity crisis, and especially the far-reaching changes consequent to the rise in temperature (3-4 degrees over the past 50 years) due to global warming, which threaten the survival of a people that lives in symbiosis with its environment and the survival of a fragile ecosystem.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Greg Hemmings (b. Canada) earned a degree in Film & Television Production. Since 1996 he has worked as assistant cameraman and TV film editor. In 2000 he founded Hemmings House Productions. His most recent work, Grave Concern (2007), was broadcasted on CBC to public and critical acclaim.

«Nine different episodes of the Arctic in winter and summer. The film’s structure follows that of Altman’s Short Cuts (1993). The style in not pure documentary and the narration is nearly invisible. A local child [...] presents the main characters. We follow them in their activities. [...] We let the Inuit speak for themselves. The choice was strategic rather than ideological because these Arctic populations have a privileged perspective on climatic
change since their activities are so closely tied to the environment».
