Sensitive to minimal changes in its delicate balance, the Artic ecosystem is additionally threatened by huge amounts of pollutants carried by winds and marine currents, with high pesticide concentrations present in the ice. Following two girls on their journey to a remote village in northern Greenland, the film presents a little known problem from the viewpoint of the local populations whose mortality and morbidity rates have risen alarmingly.
Jan van den Berg began his filmmaking career in the 1970s and founded drsFILM, a production company specialized in anthropological documentaries. His directorial debut film Olverenos (1975) was followed by Bye Jan (1992), Prisoner of Java (1995), Taming the Floods (2000), Seven Dreams of Tibet (2001), Tales of Crocodiles (2003), Deacon of Death (2004).
«The effects of POPs (persistent organic polluters) are becoming especially evident in the Inuit community. Because the chemicals are concentrated here, brought by ocean and air currents and animals, the Inuit people have extremely high toxic levels in their blood, leading to sickness and premature death. It’s an inconceivable tragedy that those people living in the most respectful way with regard to their environment are victimized by the waste of the rest of the world».
