Atanarjuat - The Fast Runner

Atanarjuat - Il corridore veloce

Evil takes the form of an outsider witchdoctor who manages to sow discord in a nomad Inuit community, destroying its social and spiritual harmony. The film, Camera d’or in Cannes Festival 2001, draws on an ancient Inuit legend, handed down from generation to generation, that teaches the young the difference between the common good and personal advantage. Although not a documentary per se, the film illustrates traditional Inuit life, its customs and clothing, before Christianization.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Zacharias Kunuk (b. 1957) grew up in the Arctic tundra, where he lived as a nomad until age 9 years. Sculptor turned film director, he founded Igloolik Isuma Productions, Inc., the first Inuit Canadian production company through which he produced films for a community that had no TV. His film credits include the shorts Qaggiq (1989), Nunaqpa (1991), Saputi (1993) and Nunavut (1995), two documentaries Nipi (1999) and Nanugiurutiga (2001). Atanarjuat is his first fiction feature followed by The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006). His works have been screened in over 60 countries, including a one-man show at the MOMA, New York, and the National Gallery of Canada

«Atanarjuat is a universal story with emotions that people all over the world can understand. It is also totally Inuit: a story we all heard as children, told and acted by Inuit. We show how the Inuit lived hundreds of years ago and what their problems were, starting with their marriage problems. This is the story we are passing on to others, just as it was passed on to us».
