Fresh water is a basic need yet poorly accessible to the majority of the world’s population. Besides its political implications, Africa’s chronically inadequate distribution of this essential resource also raises enormous problems for life in general and for the economic growth of vast regions across the continent. Through the images of Valdés, a boy from a rural village in Cameroon, Uboldi clearly illustrates the importance of having a supply of fresh water.
Francesco Uboldi (b. 1977) studied in Virginia, USA, before entering the University of Bologna where inside the university's Department of Communications he founded a multimedia communications laboratory, the starting point for making videos. He is currently doing postgraduate work in communications at the Italian- Swiss University and teaches media and video on the masters course in journalism at the Iulm, Milan. Films to his credit include the documentaries Rom, musicisti sotterranei (2004), Il libro dell'acqua (2004), presented at CinemAmbiente in 2005, L'attesa (2005), Chi ce lo fa fare! (2005), Sulla strada per Bagan (2005), presented at CinemAmbiente 2006, Jean Paul (2006), and the shorts A bocca chiusa (2004), Speculazioni filosofiche intorno al piacere (2006), and La fine prima che arrivi (2008).
«Living in a village without running water makes us Europeans acutely aware of water’s intrinsic value. Africans understand its value as if by instinct. As Valdés shows us, this appreciation emerges even before they are old enough to carry water back from a stream several kilometers away. This slice of life was filmed in the village of Baloum, Cameroon, where most of the story of my first feature film, Terzo mondo, primo, terzo, takes place».
