A journey through the rubble of a Shangai neighborhood razed to make room for urban redevelopment projects that are changing the face and life of the city. Combining real-life footage with 2D and 3D animated sequences, the Chinese artistZhenchen Liu reconstructs the city’s former appearance before its fall to the frantic modernization of a society that seems to have lost contact with its past.
Zhenchen Liu (b. 1976, Shanghai, China) studied at the l'Ecole Nationale Supèrieure de la Villa Arson, France, and then continued studies at the Le Fresnoy Center for Contemporary Art. His directorial debut film was Four Days After the Chinese New Year's Eve (2005), followed by SHANGHAIEXPRESS (2005), Shanghai Shanghai (2006), Eiffel Tour for you (2006) and Under Construction (2007).
«To comply with the actual planning of the government and the property developers of Shanghai, nearly 100,000 families are forced to move each year. Under Construction is a plastic and graphic representation of my sensations as I witness this destruction».
