A girl is walking along a disserted lakeshore, all is calm and enchantingly silent—a dream where nature appears in all of its mysterious, eternal beauty. But even in the most beautiful dreams reality intrudes, blocking blissful reverie. Disturbing the girl’s sleep is a mountain of garbage. In this delicate, poetic short film by the young Japanese director Eiji Shimada, the images are as suggestive as they are evocative.
Eiji Shimada (b. 1976, Kushiro, Japan) earned a degree in architecture from the University of Hokkaido before specializing in filmmaking while on a summer course at the University of California, Los Angeles. His directorial film was the short Hands (2001), the first Japanese film to win an award at the California Independent Film Festival. Besides directing films, Shimada teaches cinematography in elementary schools in Sapporo (since 2002) and filmmaking at the Hokkaido University (since 2008).
«This film is a visual poem about nature and our productive lifestyle».
