Starting from an urban perspective in which trees break the regular geometry of streets and buildings, Staeger’s camera, in a rapid flight like that of a horde of bees, enters between the rows of monoculture crops, where the landscape is fashioned by man, then into pristine forests, whose thick canopy appears as strikingly majestic as it is vulnerable to the threat of deforestation. A poetic tribute to the forest, one of the fundamental myths of Germanic culture.
Jörn Staeger (b. 1965, Berlin, Germany) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Hamburg from 1984 to 1991, where he earned a degree in Visual Communications. In 1994 he received a scholarship for postgraduate studies in Chicago. Since 1990 he has worked as filmmaker and cameraman for film and TV productions. He directed the short films Im Dunkel Der Projection (1986), Schacht (1988), Desolatesse (1989, co-directed with Rasmus Gerlach), Splitter (1991), Ruinen (1993), Rad (2001), Depressionismus (2001), Zielpunkte Der Stadt (2004), Lebensgeister (2004) and the TV film Hier Bin Ich-Meidner (1990).
«The forest is our natural power station for the air, the water and the ground. This film is without words; it’s more like a poem or a painting. It tries to get in contact with the main protagonist of the forest: the tree».
