The centuries-long relationship between men and whales seen through the eyes of a Japanese man, alternating between memories and images of a present time where these giants of the sea have no place, condemned to extinction by modern man’s indifference. A delicate, poetic short animation film made with the a of Greenpeace to raise awareness about whale fishing.
Koji Yamamura (b. 1964) graduated from the University of Tokyo. After working for Mukuo Studio and as free lance, he co-founded with his wife, Sanae, Yamamura Animation Inc., a company specialized in animation film production. Works to his credit include: Mt. Head (2002), which received an Oscar nomination and other international awards, and Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor (2007). Retrospectives of his works have been shown throughout the world. He currently teaches at Tokyo Zokei University and the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Animation.
« This is a story of men, whales and their relationship over time. It illustrates how dependency for each other has reversed over the years. It is a story of past memories and future hopes told through the eyes of one Japanese man».
