Students from the University of Gastronomic Science on a field trip: 154 students bicycle to the source of the Po. An excellent way to discover the area and its culture. The intent of the expedition organized by Slow-Food founder Carlo Petrini was to discover the river’s vitality and importance, its historic and cultural heritage. The idea for this enjoyable and rewarding experience came from Mario Soldati’s RAI TV show Viaggio lungo la valle del Po (1957) in which students collected testimonies from noted artists and intellectuals connected with the river (Ermanno Olmi, Gian Maria Testa, Antonio Albanese, Paolo Hendel, Ligabue, Michele Serra and others).
Dario Samuele Leone (b. Bra/Cuneo, Italy) graduated from DAMS, Bologna, before appearing in films and TV commercials. He was production director and general manager of his short film and a documentary by Francesco Amato. He is currently responsible for video production at the University of Gastronomic Science, Pollenzo. His film credits include Lacrima Inchiostro (macchie di Cesare Pavese) (2004), winner of the 2004 Med Video Festival.
«Of all the initial steps in preparing a piece of work, enquiry and study are the most creative. This is a simple documentary, an attempt by the students to delve more deeply into the subject of a river, its history, the many features of its course and the vital fragrance it has kept. In following this field trip I mainly wanted to show that it had an educational purpose: studying something by touching it, soliciting interviews from people who can offer a wealth of knowledge and who one day will no longer be around to tell their stories, together with bits of the roots of our history».
