In a world where the Western countries have assumed the role of guardian of democracy and hold it an exportable good, it appears striking that the U.S. government should be accused of using torture as a deterrent to maintain peace and in the war on terrorism. But this is not new: U.S. has been repeatedly embroiled in controversy about cruelty in its prisons and war zones. The film takes a long, hard look into the use of torture by dominant countries, like the U.S. and China, giving voice to those who have been stripped of their human rights.
Il regista / The Director
Patricio Henríquez worked as TV director in Chile until 1973 when he moved to Canada after the coup d'état. Between 1980 and 1993 he made numerous TV reportage. His film credits include Yasser Arafat et les Palestiniens, (1980), his first documentary, followed by The Last Stand of Salvador Allende (1998), Images of a Dictatorship (2000), Living in Cities (2001), Extremis (2002), Juchitan, Queer Paradise (2002), To Disobey (2005), The Dark Side of the White Lady (2006).
«The U.S. is the world’s most powerful country, so what it does is most important in the world. Of course, torture happens in small African countries and elsewhere, but it does not have the same impact as in the U.S. Americans bring a certain rationality to torture, and this rational discourse puts us 50 years behind in the domain of torture».
