Arrested by the Chinese army in 1959, Buddhist monk Palden Gyasto spent the next 30 years in prison, suffering all sorts of torture, privation, and humiliation because he demonstrated peacefully in Tibet under Chinese rule and because he refused to denounce his master as an Indian spy. After his daring escape across the eternal Himalayan snows to safety in Dharamsala, India, Gyatso now travels the world to promote the cause of independence for Tibet. Fire Under the Snow uses rare archive footage and the testimony of experts such as the Dalai Lama to recount the tragic events of an oppressed people.
After studying media arts at the University of Keio, Sasa moved from his native Japan to New York in 1998 where she received the M. A. in Media Studies at the New School University. She then made several short documentaries and collaborated as editing assistant on two features Going Under (2004) and LOVE (2005). Makoto has been directing and editing documentaries for the SONY Japanès broadband streaming video website World Event Village.
«Palden Gyatso’s life story transcends notions of religion and political movements; it speaks to our entire earthbound condition. He accommodated suffering but did not capitulate to it; this is not only his triumph, it is a story that needs re-telling in every generation. The pain and war of our own times and minds make this all the more evident».
