Degradation and decline in Campania as told by local residents unable to stop an imminent environmental and economic disaster. Esmeralda Calabria, Andrea D’Ambrosio and Peppe Ruggiero collected the testimony of breeders whose animals were killed by dioxin and of farmers whose fields were polluted from infiltration from illegal dumping sites. Behind the scenes is the camorra, which has shifted its network of business interests to waste management.
Esmeralda Calabria (b. Rome) works as film editor and has collaborated on L'albero delle pere (1998, Francesca Archibugi), Fuori dal mondo (1999, Giuseppe Piccioni), La stanza del figlio (2000, Nanni Moretti), Un viaggio chiamato amore (2001, Michele Placido), Ovunque sei (2004, Michele Placido), Il siero delle vanità (2004, Alex Infascelli), Romanzo Criminale (2005, Michele Placido), Il caimano (2006, Nanni Moretti), Lezioni di volo (2007, Francesca Archibugi), Lascia perdere Johnny! (2007, Fabrizio Bentivoglio), Tutta la vita davanti (2008, Paolo Virzì).
Andrea D'Ambrosio (b. Roccadaspide, Salerno) directed two short films Ecce Nanni (1998) and Pesci Combattenti (2002); he collaborated on the collective film Checosamanca (2006).
Peppe Ruggiero (b. Cercola, Naples) works as a journalist; former collaborator with L'Unità and Il Mattino, he currently writes for Left, Narcomafie and La Nuova Ecologia. On the 20th anniversary of the Irpinia earthquake, he published Terre tremule (2000); he collaborated on the film documentary La terra è fatta così (2004, Gianni Amelio).
«We wondered how it is possible to live like this in Italy… Waste management is a far-reaching, complex problem that involves the government, the economy, criminal organizations, public health – and not only in Campania but the entire country. We tried to shed light on the huge problems affecting four communities (Acerra, Qualiano, Giuliano, Villaricca) in the metropolitan Naples area».
