Adored by his people, feared by the U.S. government, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez cuts an unusual figure on the international political scene. La minaccia takes a critical look at the South American leader’s light and dark sides, examining the changes (from the fight against illiteracy to the massive overhaul of the air force) to a country suffering from a collapsing hospital system, due in part to the high rate of violent deaths, chronic lack of drinking water, but resting on one of the world’s largest oil reserves at the source of the Orinoco river, an immense natural resource that could earn Chavez the unconditional support of his countrymen and the diffidence of Western governments.
Foreign affairs correspondent for il "Corriere della Sera" and "Il Messaggero", Silvia Luzi has also collaborated with TG1 on services covering Africa and current events.
Luca Bellino (b. Salerno) has directed two documentaries I fuochi e la montagna (2002) and Mate y moneda (2004), in addition to numerous video art projects in Argentina and Chile. He currently teaches filmmaking at the Università di Roma TRE; he also conducted courses for the Italian Council for Refugees.
“La minaccia is an attempt to give an unbiased account of Venezuela in the aftermath of the Bolivarian revolution. The armour of a country marching united toward 21st century socialism is starting to fall apart; the film enters between the political lines dividing the voters, a separation dividing neighbourhoods, a palpable tension that explodes into aggressiveness in even the simplest gestures, the break-up of traditional bonds.”
