Behind the designation Corridor #8 looms a European Union project to build a highway from the Black Sea to the Adriatic, linking Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania. In the past 10 years, the ambitious roadbuilders have completed just 35 km of the route. In this travelogue recounting Despodov’s comic and touching encounters along a road to nowhere lengthened by tortuous detours (324 km), he meets some truly incredible people as he crosses an area caught between past and future, but fascinating in its oddities, contradictions and endless problems.
Boris Despodov (b. 1973, Sofia, Romania) graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts. After working as author and illustrator, he made his first animated film Mythology (2002), followed by the prize-winning Tick-Tack (2005) and the documentary Schindler's Lift (2005). He is currently working on the animated film Three Sisters and Andrey.
