Although illegal in most countries, animal fights continue to be a popular blood and guts ritual. But what lies behind this cruel, ancient form of "entertainment"? Employing brilliant, masterfully handled photography and an engaging style, Scagliola investigates behind the scenes of these so-called blood sports in four stories, from cock fights in Bali to globally transmitted robot wars, in which violence and barbarity are made acceptable by replacing animals with machines, sublimating cruelty and the fight instinct.
Yves Scagliola graduated in Media & Film from the University of Fribourg before attending workshops on screenwriting and filmmaking in Germany. After collaborating as free lance reporter from Asia on various newspapers and journals, including "Geo", "Max" e "Dutch", he turned to TV production in China, South Korea, and India for the BBC, CNN, NBC, ARD, and France2. After returning to his native Switzerland, he began working as free lance online editor for SF, the Swiss national TV channel. He has directed Grenzgaenger (1998), Made in China (2002) and To Xanadu (2003).
"Are we taking advantage of the natural rivalry among animals so as to sublimate our own hostility into experience of blood sport. (...) Are violence and killing part of being human, some reaction to our morality? (...) These are questions that modern civilisation is keen to avoid since they are at odds with our image of human nature."
