Each year, millions of people the world over are driven to forced displacement. From the Maldives to Brazil, and even closer to home, here in Canada, the disturbing accounts of people who have been uprooted are amazingly similar. The enormous pressure placed on rural populations as a result of the degradation of their life-supporting environment is driving them increasingly further from their way of life. The Refugees of the Blue Planet sheds light on the little-known plight of a category of individuals who are suffering the repercussions of this reality: environmental refugees. They are constantly growing in number and often have no legal status, even though their right to a clean and sustainable environment has been violated.
Hélène Choquette received a B.A. in communications from UQAM and has been working in film and television for the past 15 years. In 2003, she co-directed the innovative documentary series, Marché Jean-Talon (Best Documentary Series Award and Multiculturalism Award, Gémeaux 2004). In 2005, she made Bonnes à tout faire, a journey into the daily lives of domestic workers from the Philippines. Her second documentary, Les enfants de Tchernobyl, commemorating the 20th anniversary of world’s worst nuclear disaster, reaffirms her talent and her desire to view social phenomena from a human point of view.
Over the past fifteen years, screenwriter/director Duval has pursued an eclectic career in tune with his areas of interest. Working in both fiction and documentary categories, he has made films that stand out for their artistic, often innovative quality. His fiction works include the feature-length film Matroni et Moi (11 Jutra nominations in 2000). Among the five documentaries to his credit are La vie a du charme, 1990- 91 (First Prize, Hot-Docs Festival, 1994), Lumière des oiseaux (Jutra Best Documentary nomination, 2000) and Wow 2, inspired by Claude Jutra’s Wow. He recently co-directed Marché Jean-Talon and directed the televised drama series, Etats-Humains.
