Shit and chicks

The film gives a portrait of a simple farmer of the savannah in northwestern Ghana who uses an age-old technique to feed his chickens. Although recorded by the video camera, the actual method is unclear until the director reveals the farmer’s secret at the end of the film.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Kees van der Geest works at the Department of Human Geography, University of Amsterdam, where he focuses on issues of migration, environment, development and living conditions in Africa. Shit and Chicks is his first film.

“The question I want to raise in this film is whether African ‘development’ should come from within (that is: with local techniques and indigenous knowledge) or whether Africa can benefit more from a Western style development, based on economic rationality, technology and the maximisation of profit. I don’t have a clear-cut answer to this difficult question. (…) In my opinion, Africa can certainly benefit from some Western technologies and ‘ways of doing things’. But Africans should have the freedom to pick and choose from what the West has to offer and keep their development in their own hands.”
