The Tokyo Fish Market is the world's largest wholesale fish and seafood market, handling over 2000 tons of seafood per day imported from 60 countries. Inside the hall, this huge amount of incoming merchandise is whisked around by electric carts. Buyers roam the labyrinth of stalls, inspecting the fish before the bidding starts, while workers haul, saw, carve and chop the products for retail. The small fish are killed fresh while the customer waits and are left to die in their own blood.
Elisabetta Müller has worked with theaters and theatrical companies on making videos and organizing creativity workshops. She studied film directing, shooting and editing. Her videos (Migrations, 2004; The Show, 2005; The Market, 2006; To Nowhere; Studies for a Crucifixion; Labyrinth; Room; Japan Studies, 2007) have been screened at film festivals and collective contemporary art exhibitions.
“What is so striking about the Tokyo Fish Market is all the different kinds of activity going on in one place; inside the Tsukiji Market the atmosphere bristles with human work and sheer slaughter every morning. I wanted to depict not only the work but also the inherent violence that drives it.”
