Le città  invivibili. Torino la città  dell'automobile

Unlivable Cities - Turin motor City

Based on Guido Vitale’s book “Vita e morte dell’automobile” [Live and Death of the Automobile], this documentary was filmed in Turin and shows how the automobile has taken over city streets and squares, making pedestrians out of the rest of us. “We are immersed in a flow of metal, robbed of living space and subjected to unbearable clouds of fumes and noise…” The city center and outskirts alike are invaded by cars; the rare pedestrian zones are empty; city monuments and statues are threatened by the effects of traffic, as is our safety when we go for a walk. These and other considerations on sustainable consumption, environmental education and political initiatives were discussed at the National Forum on Environmental Education and Sustainability held in Turin in June. The address by Laura Marchetti, undersecretary of the Ministry of the Environment, opens and closes the documentary.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Roberto Franco Ghisu (Nuoro, 1974) lives and works in Turin and Prague. In 1994 he began learning filmmaking. He collaborates with RAI journalists as assistant operator; he made his first short film in 2001. In 2006 he founded Cinemarti, an arts and film workshop. Since 2007 he has collaborated as technical-scientific consultant with the Ministry of the Environment on sustainable consumption issues. His works include Acqua bene comune (2006), Andel (2005-2006) and Dies Irae (2003).

“The word ‘nature’ risks extinction. The predominant idea is anti-nature. We live on a traffic island: beyond our doorstep extends a congested network of slow-moving metal with nowhere to park it; we are submerged in a cloud of fumes and noise. Each of us—scientists and artists included—envelope ourselves with our cars, making them part of our bodies.”
Roberto Ghisu
