This short documentary portrays the Almadraba tuna fish catch in the Straits of Gibraltar. Almadraba tuna is caught by an elaborate, age-old Arabic technique of setting nets in a maze that traps the fish as they return to the Mediterranean to reproduce. A ritual of hunt, blood and death depicted in seppia photography and masterfully directed to capture the movement and dynamics in a harsh battle between man and animal.
Riccardo Íscar (Salamanca, 1961) took a degree in law before entering a career in filmmaking. His BADU. Stories from the Negev Desert (1994) won him numerous awards at ethnography festivals and was selected by Jean Rouch for screening during the exhibition Bilan du Film Ethnographique at the Musée de L´Homme, Paris.
His short films include El Diario de Manuel Ángel (1991) and A la Orilla del Río (1991). He has worked extensively as sound and photography technician in Spain and Germany; in 1998 he began teaching at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, and the CECC.
He has collaborated with José Luís Guerín, Joaquin Jordá and numerous other filmmakers who have revived the art of Spanish documentary film. In recent years he made two documentaries on Andalusian fishermen, La Punta del Moral and El Cerco, and a documentary about the last remaining mines in northern Spain.
"When I was shooting it, I could not avoid thinking about Men of Aran of Flaherty. But late I could again see Stromboli of Rossellini, that skillfully filmed the fishing of the Tunny net and the moved face of Ingrid Berman.
The sepia tone and the alteration of the shutter cause that old film effect. The effect eliminates the red color of the blood and then the spectacle of the death does not surprise us by the cruelty but by the dimension and strength of the fight, a desperate fight to survive. At the same time this effect emphasized the ancestral side of the Tunny net of Barbate, practiced on a totally artisan way, as the Arabs did more than 500 years ago."
