This film by Norwegian director Line Halvorsen focuses on the cruel and absurd circumstances surroun-
ding the Palestinian engineer Sami Al-Arian, who sought refuge in the U.S. Palestinian rights activist,
Al-Arian was persecuted by U.S. authorities for his presumed ties (later disproved) to Islamic terrorists,
which cost him three years isolated imprisonment. Bringing to the screen the lengthy legal battle his
family fought to prove his innocence and obtain his release after five years in prison, USA Vs. Al-Arian
denounces the ugly atmosphere of diffidence and persecution toward Muslims residing in the U.S. in
the wake of the recent anti-terrorism legislation enacted under the Bush administration.
After studying at the University of Trondheim and Volda University College, Halvorsen specialized in documentaries and debuted with Behind the Scenes 71° North (2000), followed by Horsebacking Australia (2000), Orphan Voices (2002), and A Stone’s Throw Away (2003).
