Gitmo - Le nuove regole della guerra

Gitmo, the film name taken from the abbreviation the US military refers to for the US Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, is the most recent documentary by prize-winning Erik Gandini, who went to Cuba with Tarik Saleh to find out about what is really happening there. Filmed in 2002 in the midst of the global war on terrorism launched by the U.S., the Guantánamo Bay detainment camp currently holds, pending trials and without legal representatives, 637 prisoners from 43 countries. The film directors were received by second lieutenant Moss who gave them a guided tour of the prison where everything seems to be in order. But the filmmakers’ curiosity leads them to discover other things besides….

Erik Gandini (Bergamo, 1967) moved to Sweden at age 18 where he currently lives. His first documentary Raja Sarajevo (1994) filmed during the Balkan War, tells the story of a group of young friends in besieged Sarajevo. Since then he has made numerous other award-winning films, including Not Without Prijedor, Ameresians, Sacrificio - Chi ha tradito Che Guevara? and Surplus-Terrorized Into Being Consumer.

Tarik Sakeh (1972), Egyptian-Swedish, was a graffiti artist in Stockholm before becoming art director for an advertising agency. Jointly with several friends in Cairo, he founded the magazine Alive. After returning to Sweden, he worked for TV and the magazine Atlas. He collaborated with Erik Gandini on the documentary Sacrificio-Who Betrayed Che Guevara? (2001). After making animation shorts, he currently works for the ATMO Animation Studio.

“We are not journalists, we are filmmakers. Journalism today is a victim of its own professionalism, its obsession with facts and standardized interviews. With this 80-minute film, we wanted to regain the reality lost in the overload of information, the reality of how human beings are detained and interrogated on small islands outside of the law.(…)”
