Over the Hedge

Based on the Michael Fry and T. Lewis comic, Over the Hedge uses a highly amusing story to deal with the theme of food and consumerism. RJ, a wily racoon and expert food thief, one night tries to steal the food stocks of Vincent, a huge bear, who catches RJ in the act and demands his food back. Wandering through the forest, RJ meets an animal community headed by Verne, the turtle. The animals compare their respective lifestyles: RJ learns about gathering and saving food for harder times. But when he persuades the others to venture beyond the forest edge and into a housing development, their ac- customed practices no longer work. In the Italian version, RJ is voiced by Luca Ward and Hammy by Pupo; in the original version, the characters’ voices are by Bruce Willis, Nick Nolte, Avril Lavigne and William Shatner.

Il regista / The Director

Karey Kirkpatrick has written screenplays for both animation and non animation films. His credits include the screenplay for the prize-winning Chicken Run, Charlotte’s Web, based on the children’s classic, and the science fiction spoof, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, based on Douglas Adams’ novel of the same name. Over the Hedge is his directorial debut.

Tim Johnson debuted in 1998 with Antz, DreamWorks’ first computer-generated animation film; he also directed the animation action film Sinbad. Legend of the Seven Seas (2003).

“I’ve always had dogs, cats, gerbils, in my life and home. I’ve always been a mountain person rather than a beach person. I actually live pretty far from the coast, right up against the forest. Growing up, my backyard was this brush line, beyond which was a field full of porcupines, raccoons, and skunks, and the whole thing. So, I would play in that field all day long for the decade before it became homes. So, I feel like there’s a bit of autobiography in this, challenging the audience to maybe see the world from the point of view of the animals”.
