Why is it that in the southern hemisphere 15 million people die each year from easily curable diseases? In the search for an answer to this question, Michele Mellare and Alessandro Rossi have conducted an accurate, in-depth enquiry into the mechanisms behind the monopoly held by Big Pharma, i.e. the cartel of the five major drugs manufacturers, which, directly or indirectly, is responsible for the persistence of apparently irresolvable public health emergencies. By showing the ties between the World Trade Organization (WTO), the drugs firms and the governments of the developed countries, and by focusing on the contentious relationship between the WTO’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), pharmaceutical patents and public health, The Drugs Ways reveals how the drugs giants block access to essential medicines.
Authors, directors and special events creators, Michele Mellara and Alessandro Rossi have worked as a team for nearly 15 years. With a good dose of eclecticism, they have combined their talents in filmmaking, creative documentaries, the theatre and special events; the public and critics alike have recognized their undeniable artistic originality. In addition to the award-winning feature Fortezza Bastiani (2002), their other works include Tic-tac Man(1996), Doma?-Case a San Pietroburgo (2003) and Un metro sotto i pesci (2006), which received a Special Mention award at last year’s Cinemambiente.
“What are the economic interests and political issues at stake, what are human rights inequalities and cultural differences that sanction limited access to essential medicines? Health For Sale gives voice to the many stakeholders in the world’s largest business. This documentary uses a variety of means to render this complex issue both comprehensible and compelling. Animation, film and TV archive material, inter- views, off-camera comments—all were necessary for uncovering the many pieces to the story of drugs and public health.”
