Mercancia is an honest, in-depth look at the production of coca paste in the Magdalena Medio area of Colombia. Avoiding preconceptions and two-bit moralism, Andrea Zambelli, far from the wealthy Western destinations of the final product, gives voice to the farmers, who live a particularly hard and dangerous life in the equatorial jungle, for whom growing coca plants is their only means of survival and for whom the problem of cocaine use/abuse is not their concern.
Andrea Zambelli (Bergamo, 1975) made his directorial debut with Farebbero tutti silenzio (2001) about Atalanta soccer team supporters. In 2002 he went to Palestine to work with Indymedia on an independent communications project in a conflict zone and filmed the docu-fiction Deheishe Camp. Over the following months he visited the refugee camps in southern Lebanon and produced Identità. In 2006 he collaborated with Teleimmagini on a literacy project in Colombia where he made Mercancia.
