13 variazioni su un tema barocco

Alessandro Gagliardo, Christian Consoli, In March 2004, the Office of Industrial Development of the Region of Sicily authorized four oil companies to explore potential oil reserves in four different areas (750 sq. km) in Sicily. One of these is Val di Noto, an  area that has become a model for developing quality tourism and biological agriculture and is listed on the  UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the properties recognized as exhibiting outstanding universal value  for its natural beauty and important baroque monuments. This film tells the story of the conflict between  the Goliaths (American oilmen) and the Davids (the Val di Noto residents) in their 2-year battle against the  project. The authors combine classic enquiry reporting with audiovisual motifs and content by using a  skilful match of graphics, animation, archive materials, music and testimonials (including Roy Paci).

Il regista / The Director

regista

Alessandro Gagliardo (Paterno?, 1983) and Christian Consoli (Catania,1983) have specialized in audiovisuals. The first is currently developing  experimental forms of production  and distribution af Malastrada Film, of which he is co-founder, the company where Christian Consoli handles audiovisual postproduction and graphics.
Antonio Longo (Catania, 1976) studied filmmaking at DAMS, Bologna and Rome, and has made several short films. His work combines cinema, music and informatics.

“The bottom-up production system, which requires the release of author’s copyright and the use of Creative Commons licences, enabled us to reach the main objective of production, which was to turn the question of exploratory drilling in the Val di Noto from a local into a national issue. Thanks to this film, the Val di Noto has attracted national and international coverage, showing that grass-roots actions initiated by the people rather than by capital interests still play an important role.”
