My country my country

Eight months of solitary work in a country devastated by war and terrorism. This is what it took Laura Poitras to make this compelling film nominated in 2007 for an Oscar for Best Documentary. In this journey into the real conditions of the Iraqi people, the film shows the absurdities and contradictions of U.S. military occupation. Poitras recounts the experience of Dr. Riyadh, a Sunnite physician, who ran for office in the 2005 elections. Following him through his daily routine of caring for patients and courageously attending political meetings, My Country My Country paints a dramatic portrait of a country in the throes of chaos and violence under foreign domination, and a population’s need for peace, democracy and freedom.

Il regista / The Director

regista

Laura Poitras (Boston, 1964) lives and works in New York. After studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, she went on to specialize in liberal arts and the media at the New School for Social Research. She made her directorial debut with the short Exact Fantasy (1996), followed by Flag Wars (2003) and O’ Say Can You See? (2004). She is currently working on a documentary about the Guantánamo military prison.

“This film was motivated by a sense of despair about the contradictions of the U. S. occupation of Iraq and its project to implement democracy in the Middle East through the use of military force. I wanted to understand these contradictions from the perspective of the people living them, on the ground.”
