London 1851. On the eve of the first Universal Exhibition, Ray Steam, a young boy from a family of scientists, receives a mysterious metallic sphere as a present from his grandfather who lives in America. However, the Ohara Foundation is also very interested in the object and starts chasing the boy. The strange object is, in fact, a powerful device that produces high pressure steam. It passes through the hands of several characters, all interested in its destructive power.
Katsuhiro Otomo (Miyagi prefecture, 1954) started his career as a comic strip artist and writer. In 1973 he published the comic strip A Gun Report and then become very popular with the Akira series. In the late1970’s, he took an interest in ‘action cinema’. Among his works are: Akira (1988) and Cannon Fodder (1995). In 2001 he was scriptwriter for Metropolis.
“To make Steamboy, Otomo brought together a highly motivated and talented team to create, in the director’s words, ‘a world of adventure, dreams and fantasy.’ Preparation on the film included in-depth research into the architecture, art, technology and clothing of Victorian England that would render the film scenario as authentic as possible.”
