Madushani, a 20-year-old student from Galle (Sri Lanka) talks about the tsunami and how the shock following the event altered the people’s relationship with the sea. On the morning of 26 December 2004, the ocean of fishermen, temples and beach games suddenly turned into a monstrous killer wave wreaking widespread death and destruction. After fear-filled months of avoiding the water, the local people have resumed a relationship, albeit a diffident one, with the sea.
