Toxic Ships

Over the past 25 years, a small Aegean port on the coast of Turkey has become the largest center for the demolition of decommissioned western ships in the Mediterranean. The work is done at cheap prices without the least safeguard for the environment or the workers. Nearly 1000 men work unprotected with toxic materials. Coming from villages up to 1400 km away, the workforce is hired as seasonal laborers for 3 to 6 months by the 18 demolition companies. The asbestos they breathe today will take its toll in later years. This film documents unforgettable scenes from life in the European Mediterranean.

Il regista / The Director

Vincenzo Pergolizzi moved to Istanbul in 1992, where he worked as teacher and journalist, writing for major newspapers. He later developed a passion for audiovisual recording, collaborating initially with the Italian-Swiss Broadcasting Network, then with the Italian Broadcasting Network (RAI). His award-winning works include Vita da profughi (2000), Ladri di organi (2002), Nomadelfia (2003), Beyoglu, dopo le esplosioni (2004), Mamma li turchi (2004), Nsehlenet: sei momenti di incontro (2005), Voci di parroci in Turchia (2006).

A story made possible with the help of honest persons from various countries. A story that will remain topical for decades: its consequences, though soon forgotten, will still be present for years to come.”
