Un metro sotto i pesci

One Meter below the Fish

Un metro sotto i pesci is a poetic account of a journey across the Po Delta, a land of unforgettable beauty, a little known area where people live below sea level. The film is also a journey into the past: Florestano Vancini captures the painful metamorphosis of the Delta in the images from documentaries he filmed there 50 years ago. Fishermen, a poet and other unusual characters make up a chorus of figures a mysterious traveller encounters before dissipating in the extraordinary beauty of this landscape.

Michele Mellare and Alessandro Rossi form an award-winning artistic team that has been working together for nearly 15 years in cinema, creative documentary filmmaking, theatre and staging of events. Nationally and internationally acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, their works include Fortezza Bastiani, finalist for the David di Donatello, Premio Solinas for best screenplay; Domà-Case a San Pietroburgo, best documentary at the Genoa Film Festival and Festival Videopolis of Pa- dua and Paradiso Terrestro.

“Many writers and directors have portrayed this landscape of sea and land. With our view, we tried to com- bine anthropological and sociological dimensions—immersing ourselves in the lives of the local people— with natural and urban features through a poetic, evocative interpretation of the lagoon. Our portrayal starts with simple direct relationships between objects, shapes and colors, adding in sound and music along with b/w and color photographs and video archive material to retrace the past on the faces of the persons living in the Delta.”
