Welcome to the world of mass food production and hi-tech farming! Moving to the beat of conveyor belts and food processing machines, the film explores without commentary the places where our food is produced: enormous spaces, surreal landscapes and bizarre sounds—a cold, sterile environment that leaves little room for individuality of the people who work there. Persons, animals, harvests and machines play a secondary role in a system designed to maintain Europe’s living standard. Unser Täglich Brot is a big-screen banquet that may be hard to digest but in which everyone takes part.
Nikolaus Geyhalter (Vienna 1972) founded the Nikolaus Geyhalter
Filmproduktion for documentary film production in 1994. His works include Washed Ashore (1994), Pripyat (1999) and Pessac. Living in a
Laboratory (2004).
“I generally make films I myself would like to see. I’m fascinated by places unfamiliar to most people. Food is produced in a closed system about which people have only a very vague idea. The stylized images of butter churns and small farms in food advertising have nothing in common with the factories where our food is really made. There’s a sort of reluctance to show these places and how they work, but I think it has to be done.”
