In the animist tradition , the soul of a child lies inside a tree that was planted when he was born. That is why, when the chainsaws get close to the village in which the story takes place, the people choose to go into exile. The very well-expressed ecological message draws its depth from African traditions and culture.
Flora Gomes (Cadique, Guinea Bissau, 1949) studied cinema at the Cuban Institute of Art and, in 1972, worked with the director Paulino Vieira for Actualidade senegalese. After making some documentaries and films for television, she was appointed Extra Director of the Guinea Bissau National Film Institute. In 1988, her best work Mortu nega was shown at the Cinema Exhibition Review Week in Venice. She made Udju Azul di Yonta in 1992 and the musical Nha fala in 2002.
