There are places we do not want to know anything about, places we would rather did not exist. One of these is the waste dump. From a human point of view, it is a horrible stinking desert of rubbish. But in fact it is a desert full of life: the astonishing profusion of insects, reptiles, birds and mammals committed to spending their whole existence there in their infinite cycle between life and death, gives such a place a strange, indefinite atmosphere almost like a dream.
Laila Pakalnina started her career as a documentarist in 1988 with ‘And’, which was then followed by ‘The Pilgrimage’ (1991), ‘The Oak’ (1997) and Martins (2002). She has also directed two long-running films, ‘The Shoe’ (1998) and ‘The Python’ (2003).
