Mani pulite

Clean Hands

Oil, oil everywhere, or as the locals from the town of Muxia call it, “chapapote”. In November 2002 the oil tanker Prestige sank off Spain’s Atlantic coast, dumping some 77,000 tons of black gold into the water. Months after the spill the coastline is still covered with a thick, gooey layer. This environmental disaster has also caused havoc for Muxia’s economy, with chapapote seeping into people’s homes and pushed by storms onto the town’s seaside plazas. The salty ocean air is permeated with the stink of oil. Volunteer cleaners in white suits work along the coasts. With their masks, gloves and boots, their bodies are sealed in plastic. They fill builders’ buckets with oil... but what are they building?
