This is a real “road movie”. More than 4000 kilometres on the roads of Brazilian sounds, not just samba and bossa-nova. The most relevant steps are in Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, with their various music styles, as frevo, maracatu, côco, embolada, forró. This is the way to show, with ludic exacteness, the multicultural shape of Brazilian music carrying on the sholulders centuries of colonization, musical instruments, rhythms, melodies, through successful syncretism involving natives, Africans, Europeans. This kind of music belongs to everybody, it is played on the roads and it is able to communicate all thoughts and feelings. The director enjoyed to make us listening and understanding this music among the folk of his country of adoption.
Il regista / The Director
Born in Orimattila in Finland in 1955, Mika Kaurismäki, has studied at the Television and Cinema University in Munich. In the mid-eighties he started to direct long fea- ture films as the grotesque gangster movie Rosso (1985) and Napoli-Berlino un taxi nella notte (1987). In 1992 he has been awarded as Best Director at the Finnish Film Prize with Zombie and the Ghost Train. He has also directed some documen- taries like Tigrero – A Film That Was Never Made (1993) with Samuel Fuller and Jim Jarmusch. Since 1989 he has been living between Europe and Rio de Janeiro.
